Possible City Garden Project referendum/opinion poll questions

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Aberdeen City Council would like to test a series of possible questions which could be used for a referendum or opinion poll on the future of Union Terrace Gardens, by asking the public to comment on a number of aspects relating to each possible question.

People who express their views are not being asked to indicate their preference for any particular question. Rather, they are being asked to comment on whether each question:

  • is written in plain language;
  • is written in neutral language, avoiding words that suggest a judgement or opinion;
  • contains factual, objective information describes the options clearly and accurately; and
  • avoids assuming anything about voters’ views.

Views received will be used to advise Council at their Full Council meeting on 14 December, where Councillors will be asked to decide whether they wish to undertake a referendum or opinion poll to judge the level of public support for the City Garden Project.

Questionnaire responses can either be submitted online, by email to the following address:elections@aberdeencity.gov.uk or by post to:

  • City Garden Project – Question Consultation
    Office of Chief Executive
    Aberdeen City Council
    Old Town House
    Broad Street
    Aberdeen, AB10 1FY

All responses should be returned by December 12.

Please note that there is no requirement to test the content of the reference to the ‘voter information pack’ (referred to in the question). This will comprise various statements from registered campaign groups and can only be produced once a referendum campaign has started and the registered groups are known.
